To build this list of the most popular books among the best of 2025 lists, I had to set some evaluation criteria. First, I selected lists published between the first week May and the second week of July. These were all lists specifically designated as best of the year so far, distinguishing them from monthly “best of” lists. Only wide-ranging lists were included, rather than genre-specific ones. If a publication had a separate fiction and nonfiction list, that was fine; if they had a general fiction list and then separate lists for sci-fi, romance, and mystery, only the general fiction list made the cut, so long as they had a range of genres (in other words, they weren’t just “literary fiction”). The lists included had as broad a range of topics as possible, so outlets that only covered specific categories of books–i.e., business books–were out. I also elected to leave out the sprawling lists of “favorites” of the year put out by NPR. They’re fine lists, but they did not use the “best of” moniker.

If you want to get in some reading and not have to worry about losing the plot, you should read short stories, too! To that end, I have pulled together a list of excellent older sci-fi and fantasy collections from small presses that you may have missed. Betcha can’t eat just one! (Note: My editor would like me to tell you that no, you should not actually eat the books.)

This week, there’s only one book that every list agrees is one of the top ten bestsellers of the moment: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid, a historical love story about two women astronauts in the 1980s.

The fall months are the best time of the year to be a book reader. The weather is getting cooler. Everyone is heading back to school and getting more serious about setting goals and accomplishing things. It’s time to break out the sweaters, head to a coffee shop to order your favorite hot beverage, and really get in some cozy hours reading a new release. It’s not just a feeling. It’s true. That’s why all the best books of the year come out in the fall. Don’t believe me? Just check out these three upcoming releases. These books are going to be a huge deal.

Middle grade doorstoppers can be the childhood reads that stick with you throughout your life—and, whatever your age, they’re always a good pick for this time of year. Vacations and warm summer evenings are a great excuse for losing yourself in a long middle grade story, using the time to become completely absorbed in a brand new world or a familiar old favourite. For the purposes of this article, I’ve chosen to define a middle grade doorstopper as a book that’s over 350 pages, as the majority of middle grade books tend to run to less than 300. Whether classic or modern, middle grade doorstoppers are a perfect summer read for readers of all ages.
