… HAVE A GOOD PLACE TO WRITE. An office, a café, a park bench, a dumpster: somewhere familiar and consistent, with a minimum of distractions but enough background buzz to keep your senses alive. Make it efficient; you don’t want to waste time rearranging your workspace every day — unless, of course, you do, in which case never mind. For me, it’s a small office full of books, with a not-too-interesting view out the window and rug in the corner for my dog. It is my belief that a dog in the room is absolutely essential for serious literary enterprise.
