Studying in a convent school meant the focus area for every child in my class was one language: English. But at home, my parents insisted that I spend every weekend listening to (and eventually reading) Hindi literature. This is how the inimitable Munshi Premchand and Shivani, and their works became a part of my life.

Hindi Diwas, a day dedicated to honouring one of India’s most widely spoken languages is marked on September 14. And if you’d like your child to partake a bit of Hindi literature as well (and maybe spend a few days away from digital distractions and English-centric bookshelves), these authors are the perfect starting point.

Munshi Premchand

If there is one name every child, especially in India, should know in Hindi literature, it is Munshi Premchand. Known as the Upanyas Samrat or ‘Emperor of Novels,’ he was a prolific writer who focussed on ordinary people but with extraordinary depth.
