New York, NY (March 12, 2025) – The National Book Foundation today announced the opening of submissions for the 76th National Book Awards. The Foundation also announced its 25 judges for this year’s Awards, in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People’s Literature.
“We are delighted to welcome these 25 intrepid readers as they join 75 years of literary history and embark upon their journeys to elevate books that will undoubtedly challenge, comfort, and inspire us,” said Ruth Dickey, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation. “The Foundation’s year-round work to celebrate exceptional books and champion a national—and global—community of readers would not be possible without the dedication of our judging panels, and we’re already eagerly anticipating the 50 Longlisted titles that will be recognized this fall.”
This year’s judges include writers, editors, publishers, booksellers, academics, critics, actors, producers, and translators from across the country. Among the panelists are National Book Award Winners, Finalists, and a past National Book Foundation Lifetime Achievement honoree; a former Oregon Poet Laureate and the current Poet Laureate of Miami-Dade County; an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award winner; an American Book Award winner; a Dayton Literary Peace Prize winner; an Edgar Allen Poe Award winner; a Lambda Literary Award winner; a PEN Translation Prize winner; a Pulitzer Prize winner; and recipients of Ford, Guggenheim, MacArthur, Mellon, National Endowment for the Arts, Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, and Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study fellowships.
The judges for the 2025 National Book Awards will select 50 Longlist titles, ten per category, to be announced mid-September, and 25 Finalists to be announced on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Winners in all five categories will be announced at the in-person 76th National Book Awards Ceremony & Benefit Dinner on Wednesday, November 19, 2025; the Ceremony will be livestreamed for readers around the globe.
